What Now?

Following the release of Winter’s Dominion: 5th Anniversary I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s next for Northsong. Today I thought I’d clear up some things I’ve hinted at in interviews or previous blog posts, as well as answer a few questions some of you may have.

First off, it’s no secret that I’ve had a full album written for about 3 years now. I’ve mentioned it plenty of times. The release date is uncertain because I still haven’t recorded it yet, but the Guitar Pro files for all the songs exist. It’s just that right now I don’t have a recording setup anymore.
More specifically, I don’t have a PC that can handle all the programs I use and recording tracks and virtual instruments running all at the same time. I also don’t even have an electric guitar anymore, or a bass. I had to leave all of these things behind when I moved to Argentina. So with that being said, I honestly still have no idea when this album will be out.

Now, when it finally is released, I plan to do something that I may have vaguely mentioned before. Over the years, it’s been getting harder and harder to “follow the formula” while still churning out new songs for this project. Plus, doing it all by yourself this whole time makes it even more difficult. That’s why I intend to lay Northsong to rest after I release my next full-length. I may record some other unreleased material afterwards and maybe even put all the covers I’ve done on an album, but for the most part, this project will be pretty much over with.
The main reason for this is because folk metal is just old, generic, and boring for me now. It used to be my favorite music to listen to, but getting older and expanding my tastes, I just can’t stand to listen to it anymore. As you can probably guess, this makes writing folk metal extremely difficult. I don’t want to bring Northsong into other genres either, because it was my very first serious music project and I want to end it on a good note and remember it for what it was, rather than try to continue it and turn it into something it’s not.

After doing away with Northsong, I plan to start a new band – a REAL band with other people in it – where every member can write songs and we can brainstorm ideas with each other and play live shows. After all, like I said – writing music by yourself for so long is exhausting.

Now that that’s all out in the open, I hope you guys will stick around for the last hurrah, and maybe follow my new band when I get around to forming it!

EDIT AUGUST 10TH, 2020: A lot of this doesn’t reflect how I feel nowadays, so don’t worry – Northsong isn’t going away.
